Each year, the Plains of Abraham attract thousands of visitors looking to relax, learn about history and enjoy the great outdoors. Whether you like going there for a stroll, a family outing or to be physically active, this large urban park is a true haven of peace in the heart of the city. However, certain rules must be followed to ensure that everyone can make the most of this shared space. Here are a few:
1. Have a picnic, but don’t barbecue
The Plains of Abraham are the ideal spot for a picnic in good company. You can make yourself comfortable on the grass or use one of the many picnic tables to enjoy a meal outdoors. However, note that it is strictly forbidden to use cooking appliances, including gas and charcoal barbecues and portable stoves. This rule is to reduce fire risks and protect the park’s vegetation.
Good to know: Bring cold foods such as ready-to-eat snacks, cold cuts, fruits and vegetables, etc. Bring a thermos or get a hot beverage from La Maison Smith café, in the central pavilion near the Edwin-Bélanger Bandstand. And above all, don’t forget to pick up your trash and put it in the bins provided. A clean park is everyone’s responsibility!
2. Keep your dog on a leash
Enjoy walking your four-legged friend? Good news: dogs are allowed on the Plains. However, at all times, your animal companion must be on a lead no longer than three metres, even if they are calm and well-trained.
You must also pick up after your dog and dispose of their excrement appropriately. The park has poop bag dispensers for your convenience. Feel free to use the water fountains to keep your dog hydrated on your walk.
3. Leave your drone at home
Amateur photographers and new tech lovers should know that the use of drones is prohibited on the Plains. But you can still take stunning photos! Pierre-Dugua-de Mons Terrace has incredible views of the river and of Château Frontenac.
4. Share the streets and paths
The Plains of Abraham are a great place to explore. The sports field’s multipurpose track can be used by pedestrians, cyclists and in-line skaters. The Nature Trail is reserved for pedestrians, while the Plains of Abraham Trail is open to both pedestrians and cyclists. Some trails offer beautiful views of the St. Lawrence River and take you all the way to Champlain Boulevard.
A few reminders to respectfully share the space:
- Keep to the right and pass on the left.
- Always be aware of other users, especially children, the elderly and leashed dogs.
- Respect the speed limit when cycling or driving and be vigilant in areas that have speed bumps.
- When cycling, ring your bell or signal your presence if you intend to overtake someone.
- Some activities are prohibited on the trails, such as skateboards, roller skis and small motorized devices. These activities, along with in-line skating, are also prohibited on the roadway in accordance with the Highway Safety Code which applies within the park.
- Good judgment and respect are the foundations of community life and that goes for the Plains, too. Whether you’re out for a run, playing with your children or simply reading a book, please be courteous to other park users.
A quick hello, a smile or a considerate gesture can make all the difference!
5. Plan how you will get there
The Plains are well-serviced by public transit and easy to get to. To take public transit, visit the Réseau de transport de la Capitale (RTC) website. Several routes have a stop near the park.
Prefer to pedal? The àVélo service offers self-serve electric-assist bicycles, giving you access to the Plains of Abraham (station located at the Plains of Abraham Museum) and Des Braves Park. It’s a fun and eco-friendly way to enjoy the site while being physically active!
For motorists, parking spots, including spots for people with reduced mobility, are available at the museum. You can also park your car in other areas. See the interactive map to learn more.
By following the rules in force and being a good citizen, everyone can have a pleasant and enriching experience on the Plains. This summer, take the time to spend time outdoors, discover the park’s many facets and, above all, enjoy it, while being conscientious and friendly!
