The Battles
Battlefields Park, which includes the Plains of Abraham and Des Braves Park, was the scene of two battles between British and French forces, joined by members of the First Nations. These two important battles took place during a major war between the French and British empires. In Québec City, they were the most significant events of the siege that beleaguered the city between the spring of 1759 and the spring of 1760.
Regiments involved, strategies, and key historical figures will eventually be presented in this section.
September 13, 1759
Battle of the Plains of Abraham
On the Plains of Abraham, on September 13, 1759, the French army, the Canadian militia, and their First Nation allies, under the command of General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, fought the British army led by General James Wolfe. After a long siege lasting over two months, the battle proved decisive for the outcome of the Seven Years’ War in North America.
April 28, 1760
Battle of Sainte-Foy
On April 28, 1760, General James Murray led the British army onto the Plains of Abraham to fight the French army and the Canadian militia led by François-Gaston de Lévis. In this final attempt to take back Quebec City after their defeat in 1759, the French and Canadians tried to turn the tide and hoped to maintain control over the St. Lawrence valley.
