Experience History as a Group on the Plains
A vast historic park in the heart of Quebec City, the Plains of Abraham are well known for shows and picnics. But they also offer another, lesser-known benefit: group activities led by historical characters! Developed by the National Battlefields Commission—the federal agency responsible for the Plains—this expertise combines learning and play for participants aged 7 to 99, and has been going strong for over 30 years.
More Than Just Entertainment
The group activities offered by the Commission are dynamic and interactive. Their goal is to bring history to life and make it accessible by helping participants understand what people who lived through the events might have felt. This is known as historical empathy.
So, more than entertainment, these activities are opportunities for discovery and exploration, backed by rigorous historical research.
You’ll never see history the same way again!
You Come to Us — Or We Come to You
Looking for a unique outing? Plan an activity on the Plains and see this iconic Québec City site in a whole new light. Looking for an outing that’s out of the ordinary? Plan an activity on the Plains and see this iconic Quebec City site in a whole new light. Your group will discover a unique urban and historical park right in the heart of the city. However, travelling to the site isn’t always possible for every group. That’s why some activities are also offered in classrooms or directly at your location. And we bet the arrival of historical characters won’t go unnoticed!
One of the greatest strengths of the Plains' activities is how effectively they bring history to life. How, you ask? A few key ingredients make the magic happen.
First, the activities are led by engaging, passionate costumed guides. You won’t meet Catherine, Pierre, or Antoine—but rather General Wolfe, General Montcalm, or an 18th-century militiaman! Their voices, outfits, and expressions are all designed to create an immersive time-travel experience.
Next, your group won’t just be passive observers. The guides involve guests with questions, games, and sometimes ask for volunteers to take part in demonstrations. Historical objects are used to illustrate key themes, and everything is based on thorough and accurate historical research. The aim is to make history fun and meaningful—not to overwhelm visitors with dry facts.
Finally, if you choose an activity on the Plains, you'll benefit from a room specially designed for group activities at the Plains of Abraham Museum—or from the historic setting of a Martello tower. A unique period atmosphere for an even more immersive experience!
An Accessible Experience
The activities at the Plains of Abraham are offered at an affordable price, making them accessible to as many people as possible. They can also be adapted for groups including people with reduced mobility or disabilities.
