German Cannons

On November 9, 2019, as part of Remembrance Day commemorations, the National Battlefields Commission inaugurated the World War I Memorial Site on the Plains of Abraham, behind the Military Drill Hall.

The ceremony took place in the presence of regiments who continue to honor the memory of the battalions that captured these cannons, namely the Royal 22e Régiment, the Canadian Grenadier Guards, the Royal Highland Regiment of Canada, the Voltigeurs de Québec, and the Royal Canadian Legion.

The Site showcases seven German cannons captured by the Canadian Expeditionary Force during this conflict and features nine stations presenting a historical context (War Memories and Canada at the Front) as well as a description of each piece of artillery. The seven cannons were taken during the famous victories at Vimy in 1917 and at Amiens, Arras, and Cambrai in 1918. They testify to the efforts and sacrifices of all those who joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force during World War I.

The World War I Memorial Site was partially funded by the Government of Canada.
